Challenges
Challenges can have either the encouraging effect or the discouraging effect, and rarely something in between. When you fall down, you can either get back up or just sit there, as it is hard to imagine a middle ground.
I often find that when those challenges are presented by a person in the form of disbelief, and that person doesn't respond well when their challenges are met, an all new challenge presents itself.
That new one usually has the discouraging effect.
We always choose how we respond to things, however hard the choice may seem. Some choices benefit no one at all. Effort should equal worth, but it isn't a requirement.
